First South Boston Restaurant Highlight: Café Porto Bello – A Blast from My Past!

Hey neighbors! I’m super excited to kick off a series of South Boston restaurant highlights with a place that’s near and dear to my heart: Café Porto Bello. And trust me, there’s a story behind why this restaurant holds such a special place in my foodie-soul.

So picture this – Mike and I were sitting down for dinner at Café Porto Bello here in Southie, and I order my all-time favorite: calamari fra diabolo. Now, if you know me, you know I’m very particular about my calamari—no flour, just that perfect spicy kick. I take a bite, turn to Mike, and say, “No one does it like this...except for that Café Porto Bello in North Attleboro.” And that’s when it hit me! This wasn’t just any Italian spot; it was THE Café Porto Bello! The same one I grew up going to, right near where I went to high school at Feehan. I had celebrated so many milestones there—my high school graduation, anniversary dinners, and now, here I was in Southie, reliving those memories bite by bite.

If you haven’t been, let me give you the lowdown. Every Monday, they offer a pasta special for just $14.95, which comes with a bowl of soup and a side salad. And the wine? It flows like water—seriously. You’ll leave happy and full, guaranteed. Just a heads up, they’re cash-only, so keep that in mind. There was an ATM inside at one point, but I'll have to verify on my next visit.

Moving next door in May didn’t help my summer bikini body goals one bit—thanks to those amazing pasta specials and my proximity to this Italian gem. But hey, some things are worth it, right?

I’m thrilled to have authentic North End cuisine right here in Southie because, let’s be real, the North End feels like a trek sometimes. Café Porto Bello is basically a hidden treasure for us here, and I’m so excited to share this slice of deliciousness with you all. If you'd like to check out the Phantom Gourmet episode highlighting this special spot in 2020, here's the link.

So, stay tuned for more local highlights. I’m on a mission to introduce you to the best spots around the neighborhood. Here’s to good food, even better memories, and many more discoveries to come!

See you at Café Porto Bello (probably tomorrow)!
